At Lost Souls, we’ve moved beyond traditional manufacturing to integrate genuine aerospace engineering into the flats fishing world. While the industry standard often relies on generic, decades old carbon "roll wrapping" techniques, we utilize 100% high modulus M46J Toray Japanese carbon fiber with a specialized filament-wound construction. This isn't just a marketing claim -it’s a technical shift. By precision-winding the filaments, we achieve a superior strength-to-weight ratio and enhanced hoop strength, providing the perfect balance of stiffness and flex required to drive a technical skiff through demanding conditions. Because our poles are built by structurally superior filament winding we feature a refined 1.25" OD, which is 1/4" slimmer than most competitors. This reduction in diameter offers a more ergonomic grip and significantly reduces hand fatigue. Real world facts and no fluff -our carbon poles are legitimately only 2.338oz per foot!
Traditional one-piece push poles often suffer from inconsistent flex profiles and cumbersome logistics. At Lost Souls, our modular sectional design is a deliberate engineering choice that solves both problems. By utilizing 7ft and 8ft sections precisely epoxy-bonded together, we can manipulate the overall flex profile of the pole with extreme accuracy. The secret lies in our integrated ferrule system; these internal structural reinforcements act as tuning points, allowing us to achieve the elusive "perfect recipe"—a pole that is stiff for maximum energy transfer but retains enough flex to prevent brittle failure under load. Beyond performance, this modularity allows us to ship our high-performance poles anywhere in the world, bypassing the extreme costs and risks associated with transporting one-piece blanks.
Developing a push pole with this level of technical sophistication required more than just high-grade carbon; it deserves a structural adhesive capable of matching its performance. We partnered with the specialists at Chemical Concepts to engineer UltraLok 54110BLK, a proprietary epoxy blended exclusively for our carbon fiber material. Achieving the ideal consistency was a process of meticulous trial and error—a search for the "Goldilocks" blend that balances viscosity and strength. If an epoxy is too thin, it pools within the ferrule connection, creating an uneven and unreliable bond; if it's too thick, it becomes difficult to apply and risks structural failure. We use UltraLok 310BLK for our Carbon to Mudfoot and Spike bonds. It is designed specifically for carbon fiber to nylon plastic joints, once again ensuring that our bonds are built to withstand the use and abuse out there on the flats.
Our relationship with the gurus at Chemical Concepts has helped us bridge the gap between art and science. These are not off-the-shelf glues; they are custom-tuned adhesives designed to "lock in" the connection between our Toray carbon sections, ferrules, and mudfoot/spikes. These specialized formulas ensure a uniform, superior bond that can withstand years of high-pressure, technical poling without degradation. By controlling the chemistry of the bond as tightly as humanly possible, we ensure that every Lost Souls pole functions as a single, indestructible unit.
